Giants Have Us In Their Books
February 2023, Fess Parker Studio Theater, Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA
I was asked to design a t-shirt for Santa Clara University's production of Giants Have Us In Their Books for one of the characters to wear onstage.

Plot: We tell stories about Giants to our kids, but what if Giants told stories about us to their kids? This play includes a series of vignettes that each have a different message about the human race.
The story that I was asked to design a t-shirt for was about a young girl who gets acne for the first time, which slowly makes her turn into a flower, as her brother tries to save her.

Concept: Since the show is based on fantasy and fiction, the director wanted the brother character to wear a fictional band t-shirt to contrast the lighter pastel colors which the young girl wears.
There is also a tiger in one of the later vignettes, so the director wanted for there to be a tiger on the shirt to foreshadow the tiger that comes later.

Process: I started by talking with the costume designer, who gave me some inspirational photos that she was going off of. I then made a basic sketch of a tiger in front of a bunch of flames and the words "Here Kitty Kitty" underneath. When I liked the layout, I drew the design via. the Procreate drawing app using the symmetry tool to make sure that the tiger was symmetrical. Once it was done, I shared it with the Costume Designer and Director, and made some adjustments based on their feedback.
Once they approved the final design, I sent it to the Costume Shop Manager, who sent it to a t-shirt printing company to print out the shirt.
